Lost in Zagreb is a research-based project dealing with public space, knowledge sharing methods, and ownership strategies. It is shaped through diverse processes, such as walks, discussions, and mapping workshops, together with a group of local people.
The core group consisted of eight people, both artists and people with other skills, including a taxi driver, an economy student, and a chef. About half of the group was born and raised in Zagreb, and others had just arrived, still seeking asylum. The participants were invited on the basis of interest and qualifications and they received a fee for their participation. The intention was to create a stronger project based on local knowledge and labour forces. Artistically, it is about investigating and asking about citizen involvement defined as voluntary. What does it mean artistically if we make the project's underlying economic reality visible? This is a key element alongside the materiality of the project.
The outcome of the process is an alternative city guidebook, which aims to lead to the discovering of new places, communities and experiences in Zagreb. The selected locations are presented through 6 chapters: community places, venues to experience art, market places, fashion, places for children, and green areas, such as the mountain Medvednica. The different voices and perspectives involved in the making are reflected in the texts and images of the guide. It is both in English, Arabic, and Croatian.
